Mr. Thompson is a graduate of Ohio Northern University Law School (February 22, 1974) completing law school in a little more than two years after beginning in the fall of 1971. His undergraduate degree is from Bowling Green University, (June, 1971). He graduated from B.G. with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Degree majoring in Business Finance. Prior to college and law school Mr. Thompson was a resident of Montgomery County and graduated from Meadowdale High School in 1967. While In law school Mr. Thompson worked as a volunteer with Allen County Legal Aid Society in Lima, Ohio and had several jobs not related to law including managing a pallet factory.

Mr. Thompson is admitted to practice before all courts of the state of Ohio, the United States Federal District Courts for the Northern District of Ohio, Southern District of Ohio and Southern District of Indiana, The United States Bankruptcy Courts for the Southern District of Ohio, United States Tax Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.

Mr. Thompson was one of the first consumer bankruptcy lawyers to be recognized as one of the “Best Lawyers in America”. This publication recognizes and lists lawyers based upon the evaluations of other lawyers already listed in the publication. Approximately one in every 200 lawyers is listed in “Best Lawyers in America”. Mr. Thompson is rated as “Distinguished” by the Martindale-Hubble attorney rating organization.

Mr. Thompson has been continuously associated with firm as it evolved over the past 30 years from Hawk and Thompson to Hawk, Thompson and DeVeny and finally to Thompson and DeVeny Co. LPA. The law firm has been located in the same office complex on Woodman Drive since October 31, 1980. From 1980 to 1997 it was at 1332 Woodman Drive and then after that building was sold the firm moved to 1340 Woodman Drive, where it is located today. Mr. Thompson’s current position with the firm is president and chief executive officer.

His primary practice is consumer bankruptcy law although he does some small business bankruptcy law, estate planning, wills, trusts, probate administration, and some civil litigation related to those practice areas..

Mr. Thompson is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association, the Dayton Bar Association, the Thomas F. Waldron American Bankruptcy Law Forum, the American Bankruptcy Institute, and the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys.

Over the past thirty years Mr. Thompson has been involved in a number of appeals, the most significant of which is probably Leonard Johnson v. Lincoln National Life Insurance Company 69 Ohio App. 3d 249, which involved establishing the legal precedent that an individual has a right to sue an insurance company under Chapter 3919 of the Ohio Revised Code to enforce errors or omissions contained within disability insurance policies. Mr. Thompson has also been the attorney of record in many bankruptcy decisions of which over 20 have been published.

Mr. Thompson has had articles published in the Dayton Montgomery County Bar Association Bar Briefs magazine relating to the practice of bankruptcy law and its relationship to other areas of law such as domestic relations law.

Mr. Thompson has been presenter at numerous presentations and lectures, both before the Thomas F. Waldron American Bankruptcy Law Forum, which is an association of local bankruptcy attorneys and various other organizations relating to the practice of bankruptcy law, or to associations of individuals who practice in other areas of law regarding the impact that bankruptcy law has on their particular field of law.

Mr. Thompson and our entire firm supports and contributes to the work of Miami Valley Fair Housing and other agencies and organizations supporting equal rights and equal justice for all individuals.

He has been married for 37 years and has two adult children. He currently resides in Vandalia, Ohio and has spent most of my life in the Dayton area. He was born in Troy, Ohio 140 years to the day after the birth of Abraham Lincoln. He greatly admires Presidents Lincoln and Truman as being men who made tough decisions under difficult circumstances solely for the good of our great country and not for personal gain.

He enjoys cycling and playing very poor golf and is an avid fan of the Cincinnati Reds regardless of their fortunes or misfortunes. He enjoys Ohio State football and University of Dayton basketball.
